I don't know how I am writing the following, but here it goes: Owen is FIVE! That is a fact--not false information. The past 5 years have been an incredible journey. Fast and slow all at once. We celebrated today with our sweet boy by filling the day with lots of fun activities.
A birthday breakfast just wouldn't be any fun without pancakes-- Owen's favorite.
Then it was off to the playground with daddy to try out Owen's awesome new remote control car (a gift from his friend Ethan).
I got a text from Eric at about 11:30 that read "My mommy is going to be mad at you." Owen knows me well-- but not that well. Birthdays are about indulgence. Alright, fine. He knows me well. I was not thrilled that a donut followed a pancake breakfast and preceded several previously promised treats.
Here Owen listens to his annual birthday song phone call from nanny and poppy and their giant dog, Lily. His expression sums it up-- pain and pleasure.
Next, we dropped off Ellis with my parents and Tante, and whisked Owen up Central Avenue to see his very first movie in a theatre. Monsters University was a good choice, though Owen explained to us afterwards that he had understood none of the plot points. He did, however, think it was hilarious when a slug monster shouts: "Oh no, I am going to be late to my first class," and then spends the next minute moving mere millimeters. That got guffaws from all of us.
After the movie we went back to the house for the return of Ellis, party hats and pizza with Grandma, Bumba and Tante.
A Coldstone Creamery Mint Chocolate Chip cake topped of the evening.
The past year has been a special one (aren't they all?). Owen tried ice skating for the first time, explored his love of prehistoric creatures, made several new friends, visited some wonderful places and stayed as grounded and kind as ever. He is one in a million and we are so proud to call Owen our son. Here is a look at our amazing little boy. Happy 5th birthday my love. May the coming year hold adventures, friendships and love--three things destined to follow you always.

Also, Owen has a totally weird-looking foot.
